I am sure many think a huge kennel is necessary to breed quality Saint Bernards , but here is a gentleman who
from 1961 until 1978 had a great impact with a limited amount of dogs.

A cheese maker by trade with children and his wife Trudi, Edi Bachman started Burgenstock kennels in 1962. His
dogs were from the famous Sauliamt Kennels of Ed Rodel ( Sauliamt will be featured on the web site in the
future). He purchased a smooth bitch from Ed Rodel, Cora v. Sauliamt, and she became his foundation brood
bitch. His kennel was named for the mountain which could be seen from the Bachman’s home on the other side
of Lake Lucerne.... Burgenstock.

All of us wish we would have the luck of Edi in his first litter ( the excellent “A” litter mentioned in Albert de la Rie’
s book) from a mating of Cora v. Sauliamt with a male owned by Hans Zimmerli 1962 and 1963 Sieger Castor v
Leberberg (SHSB 79436).

One of the “A” litter pups was sent to Canada and the du Grand Saint Bernard kennels of C.W. Cawker. This was
Asta v Burgenstock who had a huge impact on North America being bred to CH. Kobi v Steinernhof. Another and
perhaps one of his best was
Sg. Astor v. Burgenstock       , who was stud dog at the Saint Bernard Hospice.
Astor was designated Barry ( the top dog at the Hospice) for many years. Ajax v Burgenstock was kept by Edi
and was used as his kennel stud dog and produced many fine dogs.

Edi imported a male from C.W. Cawker. “Bello du Grand Saint Bernard” who was, I believe, one of the first to be
imported into Europe from North America. Bello can be found in many European pedigrees from this era, who
have Burgenstock in the pedigree. Edi also imported from the USA Siegfried's Return of Bella 240173 ( a
breeding of CH Hunk von Mardonof and Bella v Burgenatock) from Col Hagel of Siegfried Saint Bernards in the
70's. Return of Bella was bred to Zeno v Burgenstock 216614, which resulted in one litter "R" welped on
February 14, 1975 one male and two females.

Edi was a very active member in the Swiss Saint Bernard Club and one of the few in Europe who believed in line
breeding, which explains the consistency of his Saints. Another great dog in Europe was
Zenta v.
Burgenstock        , Swiss Siegerin, International Champion, and received the World Sieger title in Innsbruck in
1976.

Edi passed away at the early age of 52 after a long illness on March 24, 1978.

His kennel’s impact in the USA and Canada in the 1960’s and 1970’s was amazing, the dogs of his breedings
accounted for 26 Champions here in the USA. Here are some of the dogs from Edi's Burgenstock kennels:

-Asta v Burgenstock produced 1 US Champion
-Basko v Burgenstock produced 1 US Champion
-Bella v Burgenstock produced 1 US Champion
-Boda v Burgenstock no record
-Brandi v Bugenstock produced 5 US Champions
-Brando v Burgenstock produced 1 US Champion
-Belina v Burgenstok produced 2 US Champions
-Carina v Burgenstock produced 2 US Champion
-Farah v Burgenstock no record
-Lino v Burgenstock no record
-Lena v Burgenstock produced 1 US Champion
-Maya v Burgenstock no record
-Samba v Burgenstock produced 2 US Champions
-       Sara v Burgenstock produced 10 US Champions

(NOTE: the above listings are records found and do not include those dogs who may have produced Canadian
Champions who were not shown in the USA.)

So, watch this page! I am finding a lot of information missing on the history of this kennel, in particular, in
Europe. I will update this biography as more information is found.

I leave you with a photo of Edi holding the lead to the famous International Champion Anton v Hofli at Dr. Antonio
Morsiani's del Soccorso kennels in the 1960’s. An excellent ending I think.
